Basic Level Categories
For example, think of the middle categories in furniture/table/coffee table and vehicle/truck/fire truck. There is something special about basic-level categories such as "Table" and "Truck."
You can conjure a generalized image of a Table or a Truck, but you will be unable to get a generalizable mental image of furniture or vehicle. The basic levels start where our gestalt perception recognizes things to be categorizable as an image in the mind.
We have motor programs for interacting with chairs and cars. We can sit on a chair or a car - which means our bodies have physical relationships with sensible and specific things in the world, as opposed to general concepts that exist only in abstract realities.
Here is where we understand the important roles motion and emotion play out in the cognitive developmental stages for small children. When adults ask children to sit still or stifle their feelings, so are their minds unable to conceptualize things holistically.
The innerdance process thus bring about conditions where initial stages of learning might take place even in the adult mind that has yet to organize its thoughts integratively.
The stages of ungrowing and regrowth that reverses decades of strong emotional patterns is accelerated by strong physical motions felt in the innerdance.
As people learn to move in new ways, so do they change the nature of the body and the nature of the mind.
