Breath on Harmony

Throughout deep history, wind has always been an intrinsic aspect of our music and our language.
When we move air, we also move messages.

Breath relates to Harmony in Music, the intermixture of various elements that move through our bodies, maintaining balance or effecting transformations.

Our breathing is determined by velocity in Rate of Breath (Time) and volume in Depth of Breath (Space). As both Sound and Breath follow Rate and Depth, the facilitator consciously gains an experiential understanding of physiological transformations based on the resonances provided by the patterns in sound and frequencies.

In Time, Rate of Breath is measured in breaths per minute while Depth of Breath is measured in liters of air per breath, which shifts accordingly in Time and Space, in the horizontal and vertical axes in the graph on the right.

Depending on the facilitator's orientations and the situations present in the room, an innerdance playlist conducts these respiratory shifts through the many stages in the process.

The ventilation of air has always been an important factor in the healing process. Subtle shifts in breathing give profound permissions for a body to undergo surrender states, triggered by variations brought about by sound combinations.

Through chemoreceptors, breathing is controlled by the same areas of the brain (the pons and the medulla oblangata) that regulate dream stages, involuntary motor functions, equilibrium, eye movements. The pons is directly responsible for sleep paralysis, playing an important function in N3 sleep stage. The medulla oblangata is responsible for regulating both heart and breath rate through heightened sensitivity to the neurotransmitters sent out by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.  Breath slows and quickens, deepens and becomes shallow through the release of epinephrine, norepinephrine and acetylcholine via the efferent nerves that extend from the different areas of the spine.

The following charts show linear representations of variations in breathing patterns that take place throughout the waves of healing:

Advances in technology provide facilitators tools for accelerating or slowing down the breath, music being one such powerful tool.

Rate and Depth are actual terminologies used in music production, where the X-axis relates to speed of sound oscillations whilst the Y-axis relates to the available volume found in the sound.
In Music, harmony is defined as a simultaneous occurrence of various sounds, frequencies and chords. Using musical instruments or the human voice, harmony allows multiple layerings of consciousness to conjoin in singular moments. The innovations in digital music provided an intense condensation of what takes place in the sounds and noises the world makes everyday, bringing awareness to overlays of information spread across history and physical distances.

Within us, breathing patterns co-relate with the brain processes that harmonize between each other.  When shifts in breathing transpire, so do changes take place in brain regions also.  There are various techniques in touching the body, positioning the arms and legs that conduct these activations.
